We conduct cognitive evaluations to determine eligibility for programs for gifted children consistent with state mandates for services in public schools.
We also complete cognitive evaluations to determine whether children meet eligibility criteria for other enrichment programs.
The evaluation of the student takes approximately 1½ to 2 hours. At that time, the child is individually administered a standardized assessment of cognitive ability. Parents are asked to provide background information regarding the child’s academic history and social/behavioral development. Current learning/educational input about their child is obtained. A feedback meeting is scheduled to review the results of the evaluation. This information is provided in a timely manner, with a written report available within a few weeks.
The use of multiple criteria in the identification of gifted youngsters is important because research supports the notion of a multi-dimensional view of giftedness. The results of the cognitive evaluation may be used by your local school district as one part of the multiple criteria for gifted education eligibility.
At times, gifted youngsters may also exhibit characteristics of problems such as a learning disability or ADHD or anxiety. A careful exploration of these factors is necessary to to ensure that all of the student's needs are being met.
We also recognize that gifted children can often display negative behaviors in the classroom or at home if their needs for greater intellectual stimulation are not identified and met. A thorough and careful evaluation is completed to determine the source of these negative behaviors and result in recommendations for the school and at home.
